Darth Vader #3 has been out for a week already so it’s probably time we got a review out.
Vader is once agian off on his own pursuing matters and leads that he hopes might help him learn more about the pilot who destroyed the Death Star. All behind his master’s back.
Since he has very little influence at the moment he’s turned to the more fring elements of the galaxy to help him with his cause, as we saw in Vader #1 he recruited Boba Fett and some bad ass looking wookiee.
This time however he’s turning to Lady Indiana Jones -I mean Aphra.
I’m still not sure how I feel about the opening of this comic. I don’t know if you’d call it a gag, or an homage, but it’s certianly more than a nod. It’s essentially the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
She steals a thing, runs from a big ball (though instead of a giant stone ball it’s a droidika), and slides under a door.
I didn’t hate it, but I’m still not sure I liked it. Seems a bit too… goofy.
Anyway. Vader finds her and asks for her help. Also she pretty much has evil C-3PO. And evil R2-D2.
And I’m pretty sure she’s got a crush on Vader. Or something. She seems to act pretty casual around one of the most dangerous and intimidating figures in the galaxy which is kind of odd but it seems kinda clear they’re going for a lady-Han Solo type here. Which is fine by me.
By the time this issue ended, I felt like we had gotten introduced to a few cool new characters. I’m particulararly excited about the new astromech droid. You just wait. I’m also curious to see how they interact with Vader in future issues.
But I was also left with the feeling that nothing really happened.
Vader meets girl. Girl boots up droid. The end.
But I still really liked it. I still think Darth Vader is my favorite Star Wars series from Marvel at the moment. We’ll see soon if the Kanan series can usurp its throne as my favorite.
