After a few of our players for Edge of the Empire couldn’t make it to our game night, we decided to play X-Wing instead. Since there were three of us we had to do 2 v 1. And being the smart people we are we decided that 400 points per side wasn’t too much. It was.
It took, oh… 5? 6? hours? Yeah. Make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into if you try play that many points. Game length increases exponentially when you add more points. Most 300 point epic games I’ve played only lasted around three hours.
So Leo and I (Joe) were fighting on the side of freedom and justice and our friend Alex took command of the Empire.
My list is pictured below. I was still eager to try out Rebel Aces stuff, and redeem my failure with Nera.
Basically, I sunk waaaaay too many points into the B-Wing and tricked out my A’s, and included the good buddy combo of Hobbie and Dutch.
Leo’s 200 points all went into the Corvette and the Rebel Transport, both of which he hadn’t flown before and wanted to try out.
The starting set up is pictured below. That was our first mistake. I was a little afraid that Leo was going to run me over with his big ships, so I spaced out my ships way too far from him which was really dumb because I totally forgot I could just look at his maneuver dials to make sure he wouldn’t run me over. Go Rebels.
After a round or two of movement the daring A-Wings decided they didn’t like the thought of flying straight into a mess of imperials and took off toward their allies.
Then they changed their minds again and turned back into the fight. Tycho, Jake, and Gemmer were determined to be heroes.
Dutch, Hobbie, and Nera were having their own problems, getting chewed up by a bomber buffed by swarm tactics and Turr Fennir, they were barely surviving.
Nera got off her Advanced Proton Torpedoes right before she went up in a puff of smoke and took a lot of wasted points down with her. I don’t think I’ll be flying her again any time soon.
After surviving a round of fire with the enemy, the A-Wings managed to all avoid landing in Krassis’s firing arc, which was quite fortunate. They lived to fight another day, though not unscathed. Tycho was the only one who had yet to take damage.
And in case you were wondering, Leos’ huge ships were just putting around on the edge taking pot shots and dealing out a little stress.
Tycho, using Push the Limit, actually made it up to 5 stress tokens before the friendly space whale (Rebel Transport) came close enough to remove it all with Comms Booster.
Proton Rockets once again proved to be extremely awesome. Jake Farrell blasted Darth Vader in the face with the rockets before he got taken down by tie fighters.
Tycho completely annihilated Turr Fennir with his proton rockets before moving on to mop up even more ties with his Predator skill.
After facing what seemed like insurmountable odds, the Rebels started to even things out. All that was left of the Rebels were the Corvette, the Transport, and Tycho.
The empire still had Soontir Fel, Whisper (who was double stressed thank goodness), Mauler Mithil, Kir Kanos, Dark Curse, Backstabber, and Colonel Jendon.
Tycho made quick work of Backstabber, giving him a taste of his own medicine by the salsa bowl.
The empire managed to take down the Transport, but then in a fantastic bit of rolling on Leo’s part (and an equally unfantastic bit of rolling on Alex’s part) the Corvette took out both Fel and Whisper in one round of shooting, leaving only two ties and the Lambda shuttle after Kanos went down hard in the next round.
Tycho managed to survive the confrontation with Dark Curse and Mauler. At this point he had only taken one shield damage from Whisper.
The Corvette managed to run over Dark Curse, splattering him all over the windshield of Dodonna’s Pride.
After only a few more rounds of shooting the Corvette managed to mop up Mauler and Jendon and against all odds the day went to the Rebels! Yippee!
Lessons Learned:
1. Fly your rebel fighters close to the huge ships, otherwise there’s a lot of wasted potential, especially on the Transport that doesn’t even have any offense.
2. Nera Dantels is dead to me.
3. Tycho is a hero. Push the Limit, Proton Rockets, and Predator on him were fantastic. I had so much fun flying that guy around. MVP.
4. Don’t put Elusiveness on a Phanom. You need to avoid stress at all costs with a Phantom.
5. Know what you’re getting yourself into when you start a 400 point game.
